Up-side Down/In-side Out is an exhibition by R.G.Shaw that takes place in two parts, the first part showed in June at Temple Gallery in Dunedin.
The Otago Daily Times art Reviewer James Dignan had this to say:
"Up-side Down/In-side Out", stretches the concept of landscape to intriguing bounds.
In these busy, heavily referential works, R. G. Shaw has used art history as a springboard, appropriating concepts and images from a wide variety of sources to weave together a psychogeography of New Zealand history, culture, and landscape.
Fomison, Tenniel and Botticelli jostle for position in symbol-rich planes depicting a world out of balance.
The cycle from birth to death is played out against a multilayered mental topology bristling with ideas and noise.
Though the artist occasionally tries to pack in too many ideas for his own good, many of the works appeal strongly in the same way that the works of James Robinson attract the eye.
These pieces are difficult but rewarding, and there is a wealth of poignant detail in even the simplest of the pieces.
Tellingly, these simpler pieces, such as Mother, child, Venus, junkmail, goddess, are frequently the best of the works.
The images are frequently humorous, and are consistently provocative - as is clearly the intention.
